‘..but they shouldn’t make fun of me.. Zsolt, I am who I am. Leave me alone. It is ridiculous. Why am I like this, and why am I like that? - A strict self-examination. You are right. Here is this invisible membrane around you. - What membrane? - Everybody’s surrounded by one. - Sure. That’s why it is so hard to establish human relationships.’ Says the heroine from the animation of Kovasznai Zsolt (Habfurdo - Bubble Bath, 1979). A character, who chooses career over marriage, but still ends up being depicted as a miserable being. Despite the fact that communism advertised equality at work for both men and women, that was far from the truth. This archive focuses on the depiction of female characters in hungarian animation films from the soviet era. In this piece you can listen to a mixture of sounds, noises, melodies from some of these animations together with fragments from an interview I made to Professor Tóth Eszter Zsófia about the role and representation of women during the socialist era.
