UN/SPOKEN ARCHIVES is a project by 1st year students of the Graphic Design department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy initiated and accompanied by the Werker Collective. Here is a short snippet of me exploring how black people are portrayed in social media and memes. What are their roles? Is it all stereotypical? What image are they enforcing? Why are these images so problematic? What about the privileged gaze that consumes these images? While viewing those memes, images, videos with a critical eye I also want to embrace (some of) them – Humor as trauma relief and celebration of black culture.
