I had a conversation with Julia Morandeira Arrizabalaga, the writer of Políticas del Sueño — Un Texto por el Derecho al Descanso (The Politics of Sleep — A Text in Defense of The Right to Rest). After reading, I was intrigued by the idea of sleep as a privilege and thought of my childhood. I never wanted to go to sleep. When in bed, I turned on my flashlight and started to read. Julia’s text made me realize I was unconscious of this luxury. I am asking Julia how 24/7 capitalism, as Jonathan Crary describes our society today, and cited by Julia in her text, is delegating rest to a social luxury. Who is affected the most and how do we claim our right to rest?

Julia Morandeira Arrizabalaga writes beautifully about sleep as a privilege and 24/7 capitalism.

I copy Julia’s Spanish text into Google Translate. I am surprised it seems so accurate.

While reading the text of Julia, I was writing notes to remind myself. The days after, by talking about the text and reading other texts, I continued to do so.

While talking about Julia’s text, my boyfriend is thinking of punk scene and being a sell- out. ‘You could only refuse to be a sell-out when you have this luxury to do so’, he is saying.

My roommate sends me this link. It is an article by Yuval Noah Harari in which he talks about ‘under the skin surveillance’. It reminds me of Julia’s description of 24/7 capitalism.

I video-called Julia, to speak with her about her text. I am re-watching season 1 of David Lynch’s series Twin Peaks at the time. I get inspired by episode 3 called ‘Zen, Or The Skill To Catch A Killer’ in which agent Cooper has a dream.
